Dixon's Midseason Outlook

Dixon's Midseason Outlook

Insidelacrosse.com analyst Mark Dixon's take on the Dragons & CAA at the midseason point as the Dragons get ready for two more CAA battles this week.

What's Happened: Drexel lighting it up

Takeaway: Coach Brian Voelker said his team was going to score more goals in 2013. They had to since the Dragons lost all three starting defensemen and a four-year starter in the goal. Drexel has responded by averaging just more than 12 goals a contest — up from just over nine in 2012. At 6-2 the Dragons have come from behind in five of those games to snatch victory from the jaws of defeat. The most recent win was a thriller over Hofstra, 8-7, in triple-OT, showing the Dragons can win in single digits. This team has the firepower to win the CAA and advance to the NCAAs for the first time in program history. Still, getting outscored 51-37 in the first half is not a safe way to live.

Bonus Takeaway: The CAA is a lot like the NFC North in the NFL; teams really beat up on each other and typically win with defense. I think we are in for another slugfest of a season in 2013. UMass, Penn State, and Hofstra all feature stout defensive units. Towson is getting better as well. Even with the new rules and increased scoring, defense and goalie play could be the difference-maker in the CAA.
