Closing the Book on Bryant

Closing the Book on Bryant

Going to keep this one short because the boys took care of business on a beautiful day in West Philly in front of a decent crowd with the sun shining and the WPF faithful not needing to verbally assault the winless Bryant squad.  An 11-5 win over the Bulldogs and a 4-1 record heading into a huge week with games against Bucknell & Mt. St. Mary's is all that matters at the end of the day.

Finally the Dragons got on the board early and kept their opponent off it until the closing minutes of the first half.  Whispers that freshman keeper Will Gabrielsen would not start due to an injury floated around the tailgate and were later confirmed when #49 Cal Winkelman stepped between the pipes for his first career start.  Winkelman was peppered early and often (Bryant outshot the Dragons 44-43) but was up to the task turning aside shot after shot as the offense got it going down the opposite end.  A great performance for the redshirt freshman indeed as he turned away 15 shots and turned in a fine performance for the Dragons.  The Defense looked solid in front of him, communicating well and helping the young keeper by effectively clearing the ball out of their defensive end.  The faceoff battle was a wash, with each team winning 10/20 and the Bulldogs edging the Dragons in the ground ball battle, 29-27.

The offense got on the board early and the attack of Robert Church, Frank Fusco & Andrew Vivian had another strong showing.  It sure seems like #23 Robert Church is on a mission now and is a goal shy of 100 in his illustrious career as he netted another hat trick after a strong performance last weekend in Pittsburgh.  Freshman Frank Fusco continues to deposit the rock and had another 2 goals on Saturday and continues to be a huge presence from the left side of the cage and is a joy to watch.  Vivian has been settling in nicely at X and ended the day with a trio of assists and a goal.  Look for this unit to be in the thick of things on Tuesday night against Bucknell

The midfield got some production from the usual suspects - Ben McIntosh, Ryan Belka, Aaron Prosser & Nick Trizano - to the tune of a couple goals and some helpers.  Jordan Cunningham, Jules Raucci & TJ Foley also saw some time with the second line and hopefully their experience will help out the squad once CAA play begins.  This offense moves the ball like clockwork and will need to trim the turnovers in order to beat this Bucknell squad who is coming off a big win against the Minutemen of UMASS.

Hopefully everybody that came out to the tailgate enjoyed another great day of catching up with old friends, meeting some new ones and enjoying the food & drink provided by our amazing sponsors Landmark Americana & Sabrina's cafe.  Landmark came through with the frosty beverages and Sabrina's provided three trays of some of the best french toast in the city of Brotherly Love.  Checking to see if Bucknell will have a live audio/video feed or if we'll have to find someone at the game to get us some updates but check in on twitter @WPFLACROSSE.  Either way, stay tuned and GO DRAGONS!!!!
