At Nova

Good afternoon Alumni and Friends

Well our Dragons are back at it tonight at 7pm. Drexel takes the bus ride down Rt. 30 through West Philadelphia to the Main Line.

I am extremely proud of this group on all sides of the ball after last Saturday. Goalie play was superb, Offense put up points, and Defense didn’t let the other team score more than our team…solid recipe for a huge win! In all seriousness, the win is one the Dragons needed and deserved last Saturday…they earned it over their opponent.

I usually go into a rant about Villanova’s character, where they come from, touch on the main line persona, etc. etc. etc. We all know that’s true and it’s always fun. The hate I have towards the Villanova Lacrosse program is a unique one. Not many teams on this schedule can bring up the amount of shear disgust that I currently have and kudos to Nova for bringing that on.

In recent years we have won the battle and even in the mid to early 2000’s we went back and forth but still felt we had the edge most years.

Regardless of all that BS, it really doesn’t matter in terms of tonight’s game. Two very skilled teams will walk out on that field…the team that cannot take as many punches as the other team will win, simple as that.

Nova has the new Will Manney in Kluh and of course IL is slobbing all over his knob. Typical stuff there but from what I have seen he’s a nice little Rudy type of player, 5 foot nothing, 100 and nothing, blah blah blah…whatever he is, from what I saw last week our defense has the skills, if it wants to, to match up with every team or player in the country. It all takes focus…it all takes heart…it takes all 60 minutes of everything you got to beat a cross town rival in freezing cold February. As I have said on every post…this game hinges on the Defense. Not going to change anytime soon.

Look out for updates from the Unit on twitter @WPFlacrosse. I heard their box coach keeps it super tight over there at Nova ;)

Cheers Mates, let’s get this done team

Headed for a Showdown

Good morning Fellas

Well it’s been almost 7 full days since the heartbreaking loss to the Cavaliers at home. Great news though…we have Drexel Lacrosse action today in game two of the 2014 season. The Dragons take on the Albany Great Danes at 1:00pm today and can be webcast here: http://www.americaeast.com//mediaPortal/player.dbml?DB_OEM_ID=14000&id=1096387&catid=0 I’m guessing that may not work directly as a link but I’ll do what I can. If you can’t simply click the link than don’t be a lazy asshole and complain, simply copy and paste like we used to do back in the day.

Anyway, your boy and my fellow Dragon blogger MAvato put up all the information you need to know last night in “Know your enemy”.

I’ll simply riff here on the Drexel/Albany history…This game has always been an incredible matchup for the two programs. Back and forth year to year and honestly both schools are very similar in regards to how their lacrosse programs have progressed through the years…unfortunately Albany has been to the tournament a few years in their history and we have not…sorry to state the obvious and get everyone down in the dumps but that’s the clear difference between the teams in the 2000’s.

Last year’s game against Albany was played at home and was arguably one of the most exciting Drexel games I have ever seen as a spectator. I think the final was 20-19 with Drexel being down something like 9 at halftime. The second half was one of those stat-lines that was simply shocking from a defensive standpoint but proved to be an all-out shootout. If you remember correctly their goalie is a complete cake eater, Blaze Riorden or something. Besides talking smack directly to the WPF crew going into halftime and then getting completely lit up in the second half, he actually tried to fight the whole WPF crew after their loss on Vidas. Hilarious because in his last two years he probably has one of the worst save percentages in the game since they give up about 16-20 goals a game. Anyway, I think you can tell that I don’t like him and know that he’s swiss cheese in goal.

The one thing I will compliment Albany and Coach Marr on is their ability to implement a freelance offense each year. For the record, Drexel is very much the same way now under Coach Ford on Offense (Early 2000’s were not like that), but I have always envied Marr in sticking to the true freelance game of lacrosse on offense and trusting in his players to play the game as it was intended.

Albany is a shoot first, ask questions after the season sort of team. The amount of turnovers they have in a game is downright ridiculous but then so is the amount of goals that they score. They don’t care if they fed the crease 8 times in a row and it didn’t work, they are coming back for the 9th, 10th, 20th time. That’s just how they roll. The Thompson brothers will back in and dodge through triple teams….you have to put them on their butt, you have to slide hard, and you have to bring the same amount of resolve that those kids have with the ball in your stick. Let’s be real, and I am offender number 1, these kids are going to go down in history. Last year the numbers were historic for single season stats and it’s going to be the same way this year. They are special players and personally I think the only way to play them is bringing more focus than they do. Whoever is covering all 3…you cannot take a play off, literally. They do whatever they want whenever they want. 60 yard passes through 6 sticks…they don’t care, BUT I am sure Collins and Voelks have our guys teed up for that.

It’s going to be a wild freaking game…it goes without saying, we need a win. I know from experience it is fun as heck winning up there. The drive sucks, the city sucks, but when you come home with a win from the Purple and Yellow it’s a great feeling. Let’s get it men.

The day we have all been waiting for...

Happy Hump Day Fellas

Well it looks like the day is almost here. The day we have all waited for since the end of last season. A day that could be one for the ages ….a chance at beating UVA at home for the first time ever.

We have been playing UVA for how many years now? How many times have we been close to winning at home now? Too many is my unhumble (not a word) opinion. The time is now to beat these clowns from Charlottesville who come into West Philadelphia and laugh at Drexel. They look at Drexel like a nice little test in the beginning of the season and they move on with a close win and get better from it. You think I am kidding? I guarantee you that is their exact thought process coming in here Saturday, you can count on that and why shouldn’t they? WE HAVE NOT BEATEN THEM ONCE AT HOME. It’s time to punch them in the mouth for 60 minutes…rather then 45-50 minutes and then let UVA get their runs and beat us by 2 or 3. I’m sick and tired of these kids with good sticks and no heart coming in to 43rd and Powelton and simply being able to sneak out of here because we make a few mistakes. This Drexel team needs to come into this game with a focus and killer instinct that UVA cannot match. That’s how you beat up on an undersized UVA team that has absolutely no shot in the ACC. Let’s be real this UVA team will most likely not make the ncaa’s and/or be ranked for most of the year depending…but for Drexel that doesn’t matter. UVA continues to come in here every other year and walk out of our field with a win. It stops right now.

I am very happy to hear the reports from UMBC last week in regards to a big step in the right direction defensively. This Defense as a whole will be the key to winning games…the offense is going to score and score a lot…can the D step up and make stops…it’s your time men.

Now that I got all of that stuff out of the way, it’s going to be a freaking party down there guys. If you got a shot at making it down you better be there. We have a keg of Philly Pale Ale from Yards….kiddin’meeeee?!? Seriously. Everyone needs to make it down, it’s going to be a heck of a day. Bring your voices, bring your thirst, and bring your passion for one of the greatest things we have all been a part of in our lives, Drexel lacrosse.

See you there men
